MEMBERSHIP

Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) is a multidisciplinary, applied research university with a focus on aquaculture and fisheries, co-established by the State Oceanic Administration, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. It was elected into China’s Double First-Class Initiative in 2017 for its First-class Discipline of Fisheries and Aquaculture, and was advanced to the second round in 2022.
The university traces its origins to 1912, when it was founded as Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School by Zhang Jian and Huang Yanpei. Its school motto, Diligence, Sincerity, Dedication, and Practicality, was established in 1914. SHOU currently has about 12,600 full-time undergraduate and over 6,900 graduate students, with a faculty of more than 1,500 staff.
Five of its disciplines—Plant and Animal Science, Agricultural Science, Environment/Ecology, Engineering, and Biology & Biochemistry—rank in the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) International Discipline Ranking, and its Aquaculture & Fisheries discipline was rated A+ in the national discipline assessment. SHOU maintains close exchanges with over 140 overseas institutions, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS).
