OUC: Vice President Chen Rui attends BRICS Global University Summit

  Dr. Chen Rui, Vice President of Ocean University of China (OUC),  attended the BRICS Global University Summit (GUS) held from October 26  until October 28, 2015 in Moscow. He was invited by Anatoly Torkunov,  the rector of Moscow's State Institute of International Relations  (MGIMO-University). 

 At a sub-forum on higher education in the BRICS countries, with regards  to quality and its assessment, Vice President Chen gave a speech on  marine education in the 21st century and the challenges and  opportunities that OUC is faced with. 

 In his speech, he said that in terms of major challenges such as  ecological and climate change, as well as the utilization of marine  renewable energy, all countries should attach great importance to marine  education, channel great energy into cultivating marine talents,  promote the development of marine science and technology, and take a  scientific and sustainable approach to developing, utilizing and  protecting the ocean so as to establish a harmonious relationship  between man and the ocean. 

 “All the ocean-related scientific and educational institutes should  enhance communications and cooperation, jointly promoting the  development of marine educational programs,” Vice President Chen  concluded, after giving an overview of the achievements made by OUC in  marine-related education.

 The BRICS Global University Summit is an official event of the current  Russian presidency of BRICS and was co-hosted by Moscow's State  Institute of International Relations, Lomonosov Moscow State University,  the National University of Science and Technology MISiS, as well as the  Peoples´ Friendship University of Russia this year. It united more than  400 participants from leading universities of BRICS member-states,  including university presidents, scholars, and representatives of the  international organizations. They exchanged views and discussed on both  educational handlings of global challenges in terms of ecology, energy,  health, finance, trade, knowledge economy, information technology,  international security, etc, along with educational agendas concerning  college teaching, research, operations, quality assessment,  international rankings, distance education, etc. 

 The sponsor attached great importance to GUS. The Deputy Chairman Ilyas  Umakhanov of the Federation Council, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey  Lavrov, Education and Science Minister Dmitry Livanov, Minister Denis  Manturov of Trade and Industry of the Russian Federation and other  senior officials all attended GUS, together with the rector Anatoly  Torkunov of Moscow's State Institute of International Relations, and  President Viktor Sadovnichy of Moscow State University. 

 Vice Minister Cao Jianlin of the Ministry of Science and Technology of  the People’s Republic of China was also present at the summit, along  with more than 20 representatives from OUC, Tsinghua University, Nanjing  University, Nankai University, Dalian University of Technology.
